Drフランソア・ベルチェ氏報告神戸大学文学部(講演)社寺の訪問・視察鞍馬寺,大徳寺(四塔頭),都御所,桂離宮,醍醐寺等RERORT ON MY ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN DURING AUGUST /OCTOBER 83 Francois BERTH I ER 73 広隆寺,四芳寺,相国寺,京フランソア・ベルチェ9.16 9 ■10月I arrived in Japan on August 23rd, in order to attend the XXXI International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa, which was held this year in Tokyo then in Kyoto, from August 31st to September 7th. At this Congress, in the Section 11 the topic of which was : "Relationships between Text and Object in Ad', I presented a paper on the following theme : "The first Buddhist Sculptures in Japan, regarded from ancient Texts". That is to say, when one reads carefully old records-books, like ~ or ~'one can find some informations about the first buddhist statues introduced from Korea or carved in Japan at the end of 6th century. Of course, such very few and too succinct informations are not sufficient for a tentative to know exactly how were those images which disappeared many centuries ago. But reference to Korean sculpture of the same period can help us to imagine roughly how they looked. Another of my academic activities was a lecture I gave in September 16 at the Kobe University, under the auspices of Professor Ikegami Chuji. This lecture, presented in Japanese, had for subject : "The Images of meditating Bodhisattva//.There, I aimed to explain how the typical image of meditative Bodhisattva, which appeared in Gandhara around the second or the third century A. D., flourished in ancient China,
