I am very happy indeed to find that this young artist has made the best use of the opportuni-ties provided to him in Japan and the knowledge and experience he has acquired here have most significantly contributed to his present eminence in the field of art. Bangladesh has rich tradition of'Patuya'paintings and terracota art. Over the years episodes from mythologies, legends, love stories and, above all country's natural beauty found artistic expression in terracota, pottery, clay dolls, handic-rafts, embroidery and paintings. This rich cultural heritage which provided the foundation for his grooming as painter is abundantly evident in the paintings of Kazi Ghiyasuddin who has successfully blended his background with the know led-ge and techniques he has acquired from the mainstream of the modern world paintings. It is a matter of great satisfaction to us to learn that Dr. Kazi Ghiyasuddin wants to publish his doctorate thesis "SPIRIT OF BENGAL" I have had the pleasure to see his thesis. This contains a number of reprints of his very beautiful paintings and interpretation of his work and the sources in Bangladesh from which he derived inspiration for his creative work. I am sure his work, when published, will greatly evoke the interest of art critics not only in Japan but also in other countries including Bangladesh. Publication of his thesis will also be instrumental in building a bridge between two countries by making one aspect of our cultural heritage more widely known to all people here. He needs financial assistance to publish his work. I have no doubt philanthro-pic individuals and organisations in Japan will generously come forward to his assistance not only to promote the work of a really talented artist by his own right but also to build a bridge of solid friendship between our two countries. -229-Ambassador of Bangladesh A.
