② 20世紀日本の造形芸術史（Historyof 20th Century Art and Design) 招致研究者：武蔵野美術大学造形学部外国人研究員報告者：武蔵野美術大学教授バート・ウィンザー氏招致の第一の目的は，氏のイサム・ノグチ研究を支援するところにあった。幸いにして貴財団の援助を受けることのできたウィンザー氏は，滞日中精力的に調査・研究に当たり，「イサム・ノグチ：戦後直後の日本文化における葛藤」（下記論文要旨参照）と題する，非常に優れた論文をまとめ，10月にはニューヨーク大学より博士号を授与されるに至った。標題の論文は，とりわけその社会美術史的視点の斬新さと，対象及び資料への真摯で精緻な分析検討を特徴とし，今後，イサム・ノグチ研究の基本文献となることは疑いを容れず，かつまた，イサム・ノグチというー作家のみならず，現代日本美術研究に於いても，必ずや有益な論考として，以来多くの研究者に利されることとなるだろう。猶，この論文の邦訳出版の話が現在進められている。（「イサム・ノグチ：戦後直後の日本文化における葛藤」：論文要旨）ISAMU NOGUCHI : CONFLICTS OF JAPANESE CULTURE IN THE EARLY POSTWAR YEARS Bert Winther Institute of Fine Arts, New York University Dissertation Committee : Robert Lubar, Jonathan Hay, Hiroshi Onishi, Robert Rosenblum. This study examines the thematization of Japanese national culture in the sculpture and design of the Japanese American Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) and numerous other individuals in his milieu in Japan and the United States in the early postwar years. In 1950, Noguchi visited his father's country for the first time in nineteen years and was received with remarkable warmth and enthusiasm by the Japanese art community.
