Alongside this theory of "Abbild", the "aesthetics of light （Lichtästhetik）" forms the crux of the discussions in "The Genesis of the Cathedral". This concept is based on Erwin Panofsky's study on Abbot Suger, with Sedlmayr further developing it, proposing the ecstatic sensation of the "aesthetics of light" to modern readers viewing a cathedral. "The Genesis of the Cathedral," an attempt to reconstruct a new history woven into the idealized image of cathedrals, represents a unique instance of embedding anti－modernism within refined art historical research.The aim of this study is to employ Sedlmayr's cathedral theory as a means to uncover the concealed "conditions" of art history in the 20th century.
