The paintings are divided into two groups—those that are attributed to specific artists by signature, seal, or kiwame （accompanying authentication certificates and later authentication inscriptions written directly on the painting） and those for which the artist is unknown.The attributed paintings are arranged by period and school as follows: early ink paintings; Daitoku-ji school, Ami school, Kei school, Sesshū school, and others. Paintings for which the artist is unknown are arranged by iconography as follows: Buddhist and Daoist subjects （dōshaku）, figures （jinbutsu）, landscapes （sansui）, bird-and-flower （kachō）, and others. Attributions that have been made solely through box inscriptions or other related materials have not been adopted.
