[Explanatory Notes]1.吉備大臣入唐絵巻(全図)⑴(32.131.1)127VI 絵巻 Narrative Handscrolls This section includes plates for 45 of the narrative handscrolls that have been selected from the 94 titles (representing 188 scrolls) surveyed in 2019. The works are organized by date:Narrative handscrolls dating from the twelfth through sixteenth century (Nos. 1−7), which are reproduced in their entirety.Narrative handscroll copies dating from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries (Nos. 9−93), which are largely represented by a detail, except for one work which is shown in its entirety.The scrolls are further organized by categories adopted from Kadokawa emakimono sōran (Kadokawa shoten, 1995):Kyōsetsu (Buddhist texts)Engi and reigen (stories of the founding of temples and accounts of miraculous events), Kōsōden (biographies of celebrated monks) Monogatari, setsuwa, and kassen (narrative tales, stories from the oral tradition, and war narratives)Otogi zōshi (15th−early 17th century narratives)Kasen and uta’awase (poets and poetry contests)Giga and fūshi (caricature and satire)OthersWithin each category the works are arranged largely in accordance with the date of the original scroll from which they were copied.
